What’s Wrong With This Picture?

The correct answer is not “the photographer is lame.”   Even though that's true, it's not the answer I was looking for 😉

But doesn't it seem a little odd to see all of this extensive re-paving of our streets, right on the heels of all the doom and gloom we're hearing from the City Council about the state of the City budget?

I could understand it a little better if the roads that they were tearing up were in some serious state of disrepair, but with the exception of Greenwood and perhaps Belle, it sure seemed to me that most of the roads that are being re-paved had many more years of perfectly good service in them. Not to mention the questionable timing of tearing up all of the roads around Brittan Acres and Central Middle School on the last week of classes. Hello, gridlock.

I'm sure there's a perfectly good “fiscal explanation” regarding operational budgets and grants and all that good stuff. If anyone knows more details about this, please feel free to educate us all by posting a comment. I'd sure like to know more about it.

But regardless of where the money is coming from, is it more important for San Carlos to keep the Kiwanis Building open and not cut back the Youth Center hours, or at the end of the day is tearing up seemingly good streets the best way to spend our dwindling cash reserves?

I agree – seems like repaving good streets is a strange use of money given the budget issues not just in San Carlos but statewide. The money’s got to come from one of those two places, and we hear every day about the budget shortfalls everywhere.

I spoke with one of the City inspectors today, and he told me that this is grant money that must be used toward street improvement, and it’s a “use it or lose it” type of grant. Still, it’s a shame that the money couldn’t have been used to save some of the city programs that are on life-support right now.

    Thanks for your comments.
