Central Middle School Qualifies 9 for the California All-State Honor Band…

A few months back, I wrote about the great strides the music program at Central Middle School has made in the past two years under the guidance of Band Director Kristin Kunzelman.   In a time when the enrollment (and funding) in school musical programs has been declining, I am still amazed to see how large and successful the program has become.  How successful, you ask?

Just this past week, a number of students at Central Middle School were selected for the highly competitive California All-State Honor Band.  There were approximately 1,500 students from schools throughout the state that auditioned for the 2009 All-State Bands and only a small number were selected.  Each of them will attend the California All-State Honor Band on February 19-22 in Fresno, CA.

The Central students who were selected are:
Devin Erbes – Trombone
Ross Goffigon – Percussion
Aaron Jacobson – Trombone
Andrew Licko – Tuba
Sean Murphy – Trumpet
Julia Pokorny – Oboe
Evan Schulz – Baritone
Nico Scolieri – Flute
Frances Welsh – French Horn

This is a tremendous accomplishment for these students to be chosen.   While Central has been able to place students in the California All-State Honor Band in previous years, this year Central has tripled the previous number.

Congratulations to all the students for their hard work, and hats off to Kristin Kunzelman.  It's great to see the school music program alive and well in San Carlos!

It’s always nice to see schools supporting a good music program and participating in state honor bands. I am a former band geek and had been in a few of those programs and they were all good experiences. (Plus a nice excuse to get out of class for a few days!) Congrats to everyone who made it – I know those try-out pieces aren’t easy!
