Yesterday marked the start of the San Carlos Week of the Family 2009. And what better way to kick off the festivities than with the 15th Annual Band-A-Rama that took place at Central Middle School last night. What is Band-A-Rama? It can best be described a celebration of the phenomenal music programs that we are lucky enough to have at our middle schools in San Carlos.
Basically, the Central Middle School and Tierra Linda Middle School bands get together with whomever else wants to play (parents, siblings, pets…) and they play a program of music that’s chosen by Kristin Kunzelman and Joe Murphy, the Band Directors at Central and TL, respectively. Trust me, these pieces are no cream-puff selections, and to make things more interesting, we are sight-reading most of these selections…meaning we’ve never seen nor rehearsed the music before we sat down!
Here’s yours truly being “schooled” by the very capable trumpet section of Central Middle School:
The night was a total blast. After a nice moment of recognition for Don Eaton, who started this event 15 years ago, Mayor Bob Grassili welcomed everyone to the event — and then it was down to music. We played (or struggled through, in my case) 10 different selections, including a rocking version of “Gonna Fly Now” from the soundtrack of Rocky. For this piece, we were conducted by the awesome Jane Woodman, who is the Musical Director at Sequoia High School.
This event is open every year to anyone who basically wants to show up and play. There was a great mix of middle-school students, alumni, and parents. I haven’t played a trumpet since high-school, and it was evident. But I had great time, and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year. Many thanks to Kristin Kunzelman, Joe Murphy, and everyone else who worked so hard to make this event happen.
How is this connected to real estate? Well, it’s yet another example of how great the San Carlos community is, and why people want to live here… Now, I’m off to rehab my busted chops!
