It’s the “Home Stretch” for 1001 Laurel…

Almost There…

The scaffolding has come down, Morse Blvd is shut down for re-paving, and the new sidewalks are taking shape.   1001 Laurel, the biggest development to take place in downtown San Carlos in many years, is almost complete.     Now that it’s almost done, you can start to see the sheer scale of this project.

Two things came to my mind today when I took a walk around the outside.  First, this place is really big — not only tall, but massive around the perimeter.  But the other thing that I’m surprised to see is that I’m actually starting to like the architecture.  They could have done far worse with such a big building, and the Spanish flavor goes well with the history of this area.   I’m curious what you think about it, now that it’s almost done.

What’s Next?

According to management at Matteson Development, the Sales Office will open for business sometime in mid-April, when they’ll have model units available for people to tour.  Pricing for the units should also be available then.

Important Note…

If you plan on checking out the condos at 1001 Laurel with the intent to possibly buying one, and you’d like your favorite Realtor to assist you, you should be aware of the following rule that will very likely be in effect:  They will pay compensation to the buyer’s Realtor only if the Realtor accompanies you on the very first visit.   This is a common policy with new condo and townhouse developments, although it’s not something they’ll go out of their way to tell you.  I have seen people inadvertently eliminate their Realtor from the buying process without even knowing it.  (Not a plug for my services…just something you should know before you go.)

So get ready to check out the new kid in town.  In only a few weeks, you’ll be able to do just that.

    I too am awaiting the “grand opening” of 1001 Laurel.
    Besides being next to the Cantina which makes the best pomegrante margaritas around, the prospect of a new mixed use project in San Carlos is a good thing.
    I do wonder about the pricing – I have seen “from the high $500,000s”.
    It will be interesting to see if Matteson can get that much for one bedrooms in this market.
    Your note about the broker compensation arrangement is a good one.
    Your readers should also know that it does not cost them more for the property having their agent involved in the process.
    If you have been working with a real estate agent for some time now, looking at property, in my mind – it is only right to have this agent involved in a purchase at 1001 Laurel Street.

  • Along w/ seeing how quickly (or not) the units sell, it will also be interesting to see what goes into the retail space.

    Please- can we finally get a Peet’s. San Carlos is just about the only place w/ out one.

      I’ve heard the same rumors that Peet’s may be moving in to the bottom floor, but from conversations that I’ve had with folks over at 1001, that doesn’t seem likely. Hopefully Peets will find somewhere to set up shop in SC.

  • I drive by this development very often. It is actually a really decent location, but I suspect that it would be overpriced and the HOA may be pretty high, also.

  • I didn’t care for the height of this building when it was first going up, but now that I see the entire look it isn’t as overwhelming as I feared. I would still prefer a lower building though. I like the idea of San Carlos builders choosing different variations of the Spanish/Mediterranean type architecture so that there is more consistency and charm throughout the town.

      I think it’s going to look quite remarkable when the street repair is done, and the front facade is complete. I can’t believe I’m actually saying that, because I have always thought it was too big as well.
