Serious Run, Serious Funds…

Teachers, parents, and students of the San Carlos Charter Learning Center (SCCLC) — California’s first and oldest charter school —  will run from San Carlos to Sacramento to raise critically needed funds and draw attention to the dismal state of funding for public education in California.  The 140-mile relay run, called the Run for Funds,  begins May 16 and culminates with a rally on the steps of the state capital on May 18, the day before the statewide vote on Proposition 1B, which affects money allocated for K-14 education.

Raising Awareness and the Stakes.

The purpose of this run is not just to raise funds, but also to raise awareness in Sacaramento about the plight of funding for the California public school system.  “We are running on behalf of all public charter schools in California and for public education and educational choice in general,” said Chris Mahoney, director of the San Carlos Charter Learning Center, known as SCCLC.  Mahoney noted that runners from other public charter schools along the route are expected to join the group along the way.

But make no mistake, money is desperately needed by SCCLC to keep their programs alive in the upcoming years.  They must raise $40,000 in order to ensure it can open for classes in September, and they seek to raise another $60,000 to preserve Spanish-language and library programs.    According to Run for Funds website, if they are able to raise this $100,000 by June 30, they will receive an additional challenge grant of $630,000.    That's why the stakes are high.

Chris Mahoney wrote an article about the run and the problems facing the California Public School System that was recently picked up by none other than the Huffington Post.  Here's the article:  California's Third-World Public Schools Threaten All of Us.

If you're interested in assisiting the cause, visit the Run for Funds Website where you can donate online right from the site.   You can also email the group at getinvolved@scclc.net. And be sure to cheer the group on when they depart San Carlos for Sacramento on May 16th, right in the midst of the San Carlos Hometown Days festivities!

They will definitely have earned every penny of donations when they’re all done, that’s for sure!
