The San Mateo County Alert System.

OESoffice_1I just stumbled onto a pretty cool service that's offered by the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services:   The SMC Alert Notification.  Basically, it's a system that will automatically notify you in the event of an emergency.  Like any good alert system, it gives you the option to have the alert emailed to you, or sent as an SMS text message to your phone.  And you can modify the settings at any time.  Getting too many messages?  You can cut back on the number of cities in your preferences.

It seems to be quite interactive, as it gives you lots of city choices to receive notifications on, including the un-incorporated parts of San Mateo County.   It also allows you to identify specific addresses to watch, and also what kind of emergencies to notify you about.   Seems to be a pretty good use of technology.

If you're interested in checking it out, click here to register your email and/or phone:

I'll be “beta-testing” the system over the next few weeks, and I'll let you know what I think.   If nothing else, I'll get some interesting emails…that is, besides the ones I get every day from the Nigerian prince who needs my bank account number to stash his billions of dollars… 🙂
