Got a kindergartener starting in San Carlos next year?
Sign them up…now!
The end of November also marks the end of the annual pre-registration period for incoming kindergartners into the San Carlos Carlos School District. In past years, because of the uncertainty of getting into their neighborhood school district, parents would traditionally line up the very first day and get the registration done to ensure their child would get into their school of choice. But for some reason, this year only about 50% of the expected kindergartners have pre-registered, and the window is due to close in two weeks.
What’s up with that?
After all, It was only last year that the enrollment problems at White Oaks School forced the District to make the very unpopular decision to vector about a dozen families to an alternate school in San Carlos. With that fresh in everyone’s memory, wouldn’t it be wise to get your kindergartner enrolled ASAP, if you haven’t already done so?
If this current pre-enrollment rate continues, the School District office will likely extend the deadline by a couple of weeks to accommodate as many of these expected families as possible. But students who choose to enroll after the pre-registration period ends will be placed in their assigned home/neighborhood school on a first-come, first-served basis. Why take that chance?
To enroll your student, simply stop by the District Office at 826 Chestnut Street any time between 8:00AM – 5:00PM Mon-Fri.

Given the school budget disaster and expectation that public education will take another turn for the worse, it’s entirely possible that many people are moving straight to the decision on which private schools to apply for.

That may very well be the case. I certainly can’t think of another plausible reason why this is happening. It sure isn’t for lack of young children in San Carlos, because the parks seem to be full every day. If this is indeed the reason, it’s certainly counter-intuitive to the reports that I’m hearing about declining enrollment at privates schools due to the tough economy. Makes you wonder which one is right!

How are the expected enrollment figures being calculated? Is this from the door-to-door visits PTA members have done for an informal census and sibling information? I am sure there are people who are busy with other things that they didn’t run over to the district office to pre-register their kids but it seems low that only 1/2 of the expected turnout have pre-registered so far. I registered my daughter and all of our friends have registered their kids too…

It may be that just White Oaks and Brittan Acres familes pre-registered as the rest of the schools are not impacted and there is no issue of “getting in”
