Possibility of Teacher’s Strike Looms in San Carlos

Impasse, Key Vote May Lead to Strike

With all of the budget discussions that are swirling around City Hall, it's easy to overlook another vital organization within San Carlos that is struggling to stitch together its own budget deficit:  The San Carlos School District.   As was reported on this site back in February, the District and the San Carlos Teacher's Association (SCTA) reached an impasse in negotiations over a new contract for the upcoming fiscal year.

According to this article in the Daily Journal, the School District must vote before July 1 to retain its right to cut salaries for teachers and school employees in the upcoming year, a move the District feels is necessary to balance the budget.  If this vote happens, and discussions remain at an impasse, a strike by San Carlos teachers could be declared as soon as 3 weeks.  From a timing standpoint, according to the article, the strike would likely not take effect until the first day of school in August.

Critical Board Meeting

The above mentioned vote, as well as further discussions about the contract negotiations will likely be tabled in tonight's (June 24) board meeting, which will be held at 7:30 PM at the Central Middle School Library (828 Chestnut Street.)  This meeting is open to the public.   With all of the anxiety that parents normally face with the first week of school, the specter of a teacher's strike on the first day certainly will certainly make for a nervous summer.

Chuck, is there any way of getting rid of the fancy black screen when you click a link. I tried to click “this article in the Daily Journal” and I get the black screen that is blank. How about doing the traditional true and tried way of opening a separate web page?

relax, there will be no strike. union leadership has advised against it, according to a secret memo inadvertently released this week. this will all be resolved soon and the teachers will accept a modest salary reduction, as have almost all public employees in california and many of us in the private sector.

For those who are interested, there’s a letter from the District about the latest situation on the District website. You can find it at http://www.sancarlos.k12.ca.us/letter-from-the-board-on-negotiations/.

There’s also an FAQ on the negotiation situation available on the District website. It’s at http://www.sancarlos.k12.ca.us/negot_faq/.
