Breaking News: San Carlos City Council Votes to Move Forward with Redwood City for Fire Services.

by Chuck Gillooley

A Riveting Evening.

Just moments ago, the City Council of San Carlos voted to move forward with the City of Redwood City to provide fire services for San Carlos, once the existing Joint Power Agreement with Belmont expires in October.    The vote by the council was ultimately unanimous in favor of the Redwood City proposal over the bid submitted by Wackenhut Services, a private company based in Florida — but not before an extensive discussion by the City Council, and the impassioned comments by nearly 50 members of the community, most of whom were strongly in favor of joining forces with Redwood City.  It took a ton of guts for those residents to get up and speak to a packed house, complete with a full wall of TV news cameras.  Their comments were sometimes passionate, sometimes entertaining, but all very well thought out.   It was an absolutely riveting night of drama and politics.

Here is additional coverage by the Daily Journal and the San Jose Mercury News.

There is much work that needs to be done between now and November to button down all of the details of the contract, and the city staff hopes to have that first draft in place by June.  But choosing to stay with a regional model was an extremely smart move by this City Council, and they should be commended for the effort and thought process involved in coming to this decision.

  • Was having the choice between the two options comparison for comparison’s sake? Contracting with an out-of state company was a bad idea from the start and not the best use of time and resources. Clearly the residents felt very set against that option. Commend the city council all you want, but WHY does everything seem to be a fight in this town for what WE want?

I had to leave early, but wished I could have stayed to see the result in person.

  • Everything is a fight or a waste of resources because of our City Council and City Manager. I’d say with exception of Bob G. The city wasted the same time and resources when it came to the decision with our Police Department which we will never get back. At least in some ways we saved our Fire Department. The smartest thing would have been to merge Police and Fire with Belmont but because of cry baby Andy that will never be.

  • I congratulate the city council for dealing with this tough issue. I like the outside of the box thinking, and the final decision seems a good one to pursue for now. They also did a good job with the police dept, and I hope they know there are people in this town that appreciate their work.

    • I agree with JB. We NEED to start thinking out of the box. We are millions in the hole. We don’t want to become a Vallejo. We want to return to the city of good living by tightening our belt.
Kudos to our entrie city council for all their efforts.

  • Kudos to the citizens of San Carlos for stopping the three horse men from pulling another fast one for their political gain. No one wants to play with those guys. Belmont, San Mateo County, CDF etc. Best of luck to our firefighters. Glad we didn’t loose you boys like we lost our cops.

  • Julie, let’s not forget that the San Carlos City Council (and our former City manager who is probably sunning himself on a beach courtesy of the San carlos taxpayers and his golden parachute) initiated and created this situation. What sense does it make to sever ties with an adjacent city’s fire department in favor of partnering with the other adjacent city’s fire department without first negotiating an imprived contract??

Most of the city council members have personal agendas that are not in the city’s best interest.

It’s embarrassing that you can barely watch the local newscast without seeing the San Carlos city follies headlining the promos.

This is attention that we should not warrant, but sadly we do.

  • Congratulations I guess to Redwood City. You might want to stock up on some aspirin and tums for when you have to deal will the San Carlos City Council.

    • Sounds like “Bitter, party of ONE”. Good luck going solo, Belmont – I give you guys two years before you go crawling to San Mateo or Redwood City. Coralin’s a perfect mayor for you guys – Anti Everyone.
