HomeTown-Days

31st Annual:  May 20-22.

The San Carlos Hometown Days committee announced the dates for this year's edition of the city's long-standing tradition:  San Carlos Hometown Days.  Over the weekend of May 20-22, Burton Park and various parts of the downtown area of San Carlos will once again be transformed into party-central for kids and adults alike.   A fun-run, parade, live music, great food, and other events will be just part of the Hometown Days festivities for this year.    It's a fantastic event, and a great way to reconnect with friends and neighbors that you haven't seen in a few months.

Be sure to check the Hometown Days website for updates on the planned events… and enjoy this great tradition that is uniquely San Carlos!

So I guess all is well in the city of good living. In the wake of the plea to renew the parcel tax for our ailing school system, apparently the teachers and students in our schools have everything they need, police and fire protection are secure, park maintenance and all public services are paid for and thriving…who is funding this event and would we really miss it if it were shelved?

Yet another reason why I say “no” when the city has their hand out for more funds. They don’t know how to prioritize and cannot be trusted to spend “our” money responsibly.

Michael — without commenting specially on your point, I do want to clarify something which I think is a widely held misconception among many in our city (and in many other cities). The school district and the city are two separate government agencies with no official relationship between them (other than some collaboration that happens between the entities). Neither one is part of the other nor does either have jurisdiction over the other — it just so happens that they share a geography (and even that is not exact — there are areas in the City of San Carlos which are not part of the San Carlos School District). So, to be clear, Hometown Days has absolutely nothing to do with the financial situation of the schools.

    Michael,

Hometown Days is an event funded by sponsors, donations, and run solely by volunteers. We get donations from the public in the form of Paypal on our website as well. All the service clubs in San Carlos participate and Hometown Days is their biggest fundraining opportunity of the year. The money they make goes back into their community support programs. The San Mateo County Sherrif’s Office is underwrtiting deputies(the largest expense), for the event this year as part of their transition contract. As San Carlos Bureau Captain Rothaus has stated in a recent press release, “we dont want to just police the community, we want to be a part of the community”. This was instrumental in making sure the event wasn’t “shelved” as you put it.. This event raises money for vital community entities and brings thousands of folks from all over the Peninsula to our community all weekend. We hope you will take a moment to appreciate the tireless efforts of volunteers (your neighbors) who make this happen, and have made it happen, for 31 years now. http://www.sancarloshometowndays.com
