Sheriff’s Department Warns of Car Burglary Increase in San Carlos.

by Chuck Gillooley

Uptick in Break-Ins.

Just a couple of days ago, the San Carlos Bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department issued an unprecedented warning to San Carlos residents in response to a rash of car burglaries that have plagued the entire city in recent weeks.   While theft from vehicles has been a steady problem in San Carlos over the years, the past month as seen the number of reported burglaries skyrocket to 36 in just the past 3 weeks.

Ironically, many victims have made it exceedingly easy for crooks to help themselves to personal belongings their cars.   In many cases, the car doors were left unlocked, and valuables were left in plain sight.

KTVU ran a featured news report on this a couple of nights ago.  Click here for the video: SAN CARLOS: Neighborhood Warned About Rash Of Car Break-Ins

Common Sense Deterrents.

There are some easy and common sense things that residents can do to deter the car thieves:

  • Double-check that your car doors are locked at night.
  • Remove any and all valuables from the car.   If you must have them in the car, keep them out of plain sight.
  • Try to park in a well-lit area.

The thieves seem to be favoring the easy targets.  Don’t make yourself one of them.

  • My next-door neighbor has 1 car, a 2-car garage, and parks outside. Inside is a bunch of kids’ toys. Outside is a bunch of kids’ toys.

Why not get rid of a bunch of clutter and park in your garage? This would help a lot — keeping cars off the streets.

  • I’m sure it is not a unique problem to San Carlos, but it sure is common. All homes on our block have 2 or 3 car garages and less than half of my neighbors actually park in their garages, let alone their driveways.

It’s astonishing to me that people place more value on the clutter in their garages than their expensive cars they leave outside for thieves to steal, vandalize or break-in to.

We manage to park 2 of our 3 cars in our garage and have room for all our holiday decorations, garden tools, etc.
