National-Night-Out-16

TONIGHT, for the 7th straight year, the White Oaks neighborhood of San Carlos will roll out the red carpet to celebrate National Night Out. This is a nationwide annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community. partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. It has grown in popularity in San Carlos, thanks in large part to a tireless group of neighbors and community activists who have organized neighborhood watch teams, improved communications with local police and City Council members, and made this event bigger and better every year. Here is a quick list of the details:

What:  National Night Out Celebration.

When:  TONIGHT, August 2nd starting at 5:30 and running until 8:00 PM.

Where: 100 Block of Sunnydale Avenue, San Carlos

This year's event will once again feature food, ice cream, and lots of activities to get residents out of their houses and mingling with their neighbors. Here is a great rundown of all the activities, courtesy of White Oaks Resident and longtime champion of this event, Ken Castle:

Forget about dinner at home tomorrow night – come celebrate the 7th anniversary of White Oaks’ National Night Out with a salute to our first responders. Take your choice of jalapeno-stuffed burgers or piquant chicken wings and garlic fries as Sunnydale Avenue hosts our neighborhood’s largest annual block party. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Organized again by the Widner and DeMeo families on the 100 block of Sunnydale (between Stanford Lane and Elm Street), this year’s event features police and fire vehicles, deputies and firefighters, city officials and a free ice cream social. It’s a stellar event for families and kids, long-time residents, newcomers to the neighborhood and anyone who appreciates the special place that is White Oaks.   The entire block will be closed off to allow for easy access and mingling.

National Night Out is celebrated across the country, and reflects organized efforts by residential communities to create awareness of security issues, from burglaries and vandalism to fire hazards and natural disasters. The intent is for neighbors to work together in addressing common threats and matters of concern.

Apart from displays set up by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the Redwood City/San Carlos Fire Department, two well-known Bay Area gourmet food trucks will provide delectable dining options. Back again this year is The Steamin’ Burger, which features jalapeno-stuffed Angus beef burgers, and newcomer Cluck It Up, which features chicken wings and boneless strips and a host of dipping sauces, along with garlic fries. Food will be available for purchase as long as supplies last. The food trucks will begin serving at 5:30 p.m., and the Ice Cream Social and other activities run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sponsors include Roberts Market, Marianne’s Ice Cream and Full Belly Farm.

As in other years past, expect to see members of the San Carlos city council, officials from city hall, our local police chief, Capt. Greg Rothaus, and members of the fire department. (Note: Some local firefighters are currently deployed in Monterey Count to fight the massive wildfire in the high country there.)

Come, join with your neighbors, enjoy the food and ice cream, and thank our first responders for everything they do for us.
