Perhaps you have noticed the increased construction activity around the corner of San Carlos Avenue and Laurel Street lately? Or maybe you've seen the rows or parking spaces that have been sequentially closed off in the back parking lot while construction crews start preparing the underground utilities. What you are witnessing is the beginning of the long-awaited Wheeler Plaza Development Program in downtown San Carlos.

I have been writing articles about the Wheeler Plaza project on the blog for as long as I can remember. I recently searched through the archives and discovered that the first time I posted on the controversial project was 8 years ago! So if it seems like it has taken forever for this project to finally break ground, you're not too far off. But the day is finally here, and ground has been broken.

For those of you not familiar with the Wheeler Plaza Development Project, it encompasses nearly 3 acres of city-owned land that is bordered roughly by San Carlos Avenue, Laurel Street, Walnut Street, and Cherry Street in downtown San Carlos. The City has long desired to convert these aging buildings and eyesore of a parking lot into a modern, mixed-use facility which adds new housing units and modern retail space, while becoming the face of the popular downtown San Carlos dining and shopping district.

When it is complete in 2018, this new facility will house 109 condo units, 10,000 square feet of modern retail space, and 252 public parking spots (in addition to those allocated to the new residents.) There will also be considerable space dedicated to outdoor amenities, and the architecture of the complex will hold true to the Spanish roots of San Carlos.

The main parking lot behind Wells Fargo Bank and Le Boulanger will close for good in February, as excavation and construction swings into full mode. The City of San Carlos has taken many steps to minimize the temporary loss of parking spaces, including valet assisted parking, and the reallocation of other parking lots. It will take some re-adjustment by residents and shoppers, but it will be a fabulous landmark when it is completed.

Free attended 3 hour public parking is also available on the top level of the SamTrans building, accessible form Walnut Street just north of San Carlos Avenue.
