Chickens in San Carlos? You bet!   They actually make great pets  — we have three of them ourselves.  They are very self sufficient, and when you handle them consistently from when they’re chicks, they can be as personable as a dog.   But best of all, you can’t beat a pet that gives you breakfast every day.

Up until a year ago,  it wasn’t easy to raise chickens in San Carlos because it was next to impossible to get the required permit to own chickens within the City limits.  But thanks to to the work of a very determined San Carlos 4H-er, it’s now quite easy to own and raise chickens in San Carlos.   Interested, but not sure how to start, or what’s involved?  No problem.   That very same family will be teaching a comprehensive course this coming weekend that will tell you everything you need to know.   Here are the details of the course, which is being offered through the San Carlos Park and Rec Department:

“Backyard Chickens – How to Raise Them Right.”

Interested in fresh eggs and a bit of entertainment out back? San Carlos/Eaton Hills 4H members will cover all the basics of chicken care. Learn where to get chickens, what breeds are best, how to house and feed them, hear a few chicken tales and more. There will be a simultaneous program, including games and crafts, for kids accompanying their parent(s) to the workshop. For more information, call Bruce Knoth at 654-4975. Instructor: San Carlos/Eaton Hills 4H (1 class)

Do you find that the chickens bring a lot of flies? My next door neighbor has chickens and it seems like a lot of flies are coming into my yard. Also, should you do about the bad smell they can create?

Chickens are like other household pets – the yard and their housing needs to be kept clean.
