The White Oaks Blog now optimized for mobile browsing…

January 6, 2009

Here's a cool new feature on the blog I wanted to share with you.  For those of you who view the blog via a mobile phone (iPhone, Treo, Blackberry, etc..,) the White Oaks Blog should now be MUCH quicker for you to view.   I just optimized the site so that it automatically detects if you're using a mobile browser — if so, you get a version of the site that is much lighter and cleaner, and consequently loads much faster.   I tried it with and without the optimization, and the results were amazing.

The best part about this is that there's nothing you need to do.   The web address for The White Oaks Blog remains the same, but you'll notice that the title of the site will read “The White Oaks Blog Mobile” when you access it from a mobile device.     Check it out and let me know what you think.   I have incorporated the same feature on my San Francisco Peninsula Blog as well as The Emerald Hills Blog.

iPhone users:

Please let me know which version you like better — the full version, or the “light” site.  Since the browsing capability of the iPhone is so good, the optimization setting allows the iPhone to be treated as a “normal” browser, so I can easily switch the iPhone back to the normal site without impacting any other mobile phone browser (Windows CE, Opera, etc..)

Happy Reading!

iPhone user here. I like the mobile version better. It loads much more quickly which is really nice. I would default to that with an option below to load up the full version (which is what other sites like Facebook do).

The only hiccup was that I couldn’t post a comment via the mobile site on my iPhone.

    Chuck,

Dave from the blog lab. Postong this comment from my Blackberry. Using the mobile web gateway to do so.

One thing that is different. The comment section is not at the bottom of the post. There is a link to post a comment that brings me to the comment form. Other than that it seems to function the same. I still have the check box for notify me of comments.

I don’t however know how it looks from an iPhone. And I know it is differnt from the bb built in browser and the Opera mini.

There are a lot of variables involved. But it is working for me right now to leave this comment.

Thanks for using MobilePress! Just leaving a comment through your mobile version, it works. I will respond to your email. 🙂

Outstanding! Thanks for letting me know that it works on the blackjack. It seems that the only remaining unknown is the iPhone, and possibly the Android. We’re trying to verify that now.

If you’re going to be reading this every day on the train, I’d better get started writing some decent material 🙂
