The Depot Cafe in San Carlos to Close.

February 8, 2018

A Casualty of Progress?

After 34 years in business, the iconic Depot Cafe at the San Carlos Caltrain Station will be closing its doors forever on February 18th. According to this article in the Daily Journal, the owner of the Cafe cited the new construction at the massive San Carlos Transit Village and the lack of a long-tern lease as the primary reasons behind her decision to close this San Carlos landmark.

With its generous servings and always reasonable prices, the Depot Cafe has long been one of my favorite breakfast spots and has always been one of our “go-to” places when my kids come back from college. It will very sad to see this fabulous slice of San Carlos history fade into the sunset, with its quaint tablecloths and amazing train photos that grace the walls.  It's especially tough to see San Carlos lose a family-friendly restaurant — something that's already sorely in short supply in our downtown district.

Business has obviously been very brisk since the announcement as long-time patrons come back in for a final breakfast and to reminisce about the old cafe. So be sure to get in for your last omelette before the Cafe closes for good on the 18th.

(Speaking of photos and memorabilia, according to a sign across the front of the building, there will be an auction on February 19th, presumably for collectors and fans to retain a piece of their history.)

A nice reflection, Chuck, thanx. Not sure if you saw this — https://council.olbert.com/2018/02/01/the-depot-cafe/ — but I looked into what led to the situation and wanted to share what I learned.
