A Time of Need.

The dramatic turn of events last week has transformed everyone's daily life, and definitely not for the better.  Whether it's having to work from home, dealing with school closures, or canceled travel, nobody is going to escape the collateral damage of the coronavirus.

With the exception of people needlessly panic-buying goods at Costco and Trader Joe's, I'm seeing that most stores and restaurants are eerily resembling ghost towns right now, and that spells trouble BIG for our local merchants.

One of things that sets the downtown shopping district of San Carlos apart from other cities is the distinct lack of chain stores.  This is not by accident, and it's the main reason San Carlos has not lost all of its charm despite all of the rapid development taking place.  But these small business owners and restaurateurs will suffer greatly if this situation continues, and by all accounts it seems that it will do just that.  They don't have the deep pockets of the chain retailers to ride out downturn like this.

So while you are hunkered down in your homes this weekend, and for the foreseeable future, think about making an extra effort to support our local businesses.  Even if it just means ordering take-out to adhere to “social distancing”, every bit helps.  Purchasing gift cards for the future is another great way to show support (thanks to Michelle Briggs for that suggestion!)

When this crisis is ultimately resolved, it would be a shame if our downtown is permanently altered by the loss of some great family-run businesses.  So please do your part:
