Starbucks Closes Two San Carlos Locations

If Starbucks is your jam for coffee, then it's going to be a bit less convenient for you to get your fix in San Carlos.

As part of its corporate plan to shutter 250 locations across the United States and Canada, two of the three San Carlos Starbucks locations will be closing, according to this article in the SF Gate. There are a total of 64 locations across California that will be impacted.

Starbucks has been under financial pressure for the past several years, as consumer habits have shifted, and they've acknowledged numerous times the difficulty they are having delivering the “Starbucks Experience” across all of their stores. I tend to agree with the latter assessment — the last coffee drink I had at Starbucks was pretty forgettable.

They also faced a ton of competition, especially along Laurel Street. With choices like Plantation, Groovy Goose, Peets, Papachay, and Mints and Honey, San Carlos residents have lots of solid choices for gourmet coffee and breakfast munchies besides Starbucks.

And one may wonder whether a city of 30,000 residents needed three separate Starbucks storefronts in the first place.

The two locations facing closure are:

• 1187 San Carlos Avenue (the prime spot on the corner of San Carlos Avenue and Laurel Street)
• 1135 Industrial Road (Best Buy parking lot)

Today will be the last day of operation for both of these locations, as I confirmed with one of their employees. This leaves the store at 856 Laurel Street as the only Starbucks location left in San Carlos.

It will be interesting to see who takes over that marquee downtown location on the corner of San Carlos Avenue and Laurel Street. If anyone knows, please leave a comment below!
